New Developments in MALDI Imaging Mass Spectrometry
A new imaging mass spectrometry review article by P. Chaurand, J. Norris, D. S. Cornett, J. Mobley, and R. Caprioli ("New Developments in Profiling and Imaging of Proteins from Tissue Sections by MALDI Mass Spectrometry" J. Proteome Res. 2006, (5), 2889-2900) gets into clinical applications, recent technical developments, and biomarker strategies.

"While this capability is routinely available for known individual proteins via immunohistochemistry, IMS offers the potential for simultaneous analysis of many molecular species present in a single tumor regardless of the availability of specific antibodies."

The article's second author is Protein Discovery's Director Mass Spectrometry, Jeremy Norris, PhD, and it provides specific detail on MALDI imaging mass spectrometry method development and optimization strategies that have now been used to inform protocol design for Protein Discove
ry's tissue imaging and profiling services.

"Here, we review the protocols and methodologies that we routinely employ to profile and image peptides and proteins in these tissue sections by MALDI-MS. We also describe some of the data processing tools necessary to explore the information recovered in these profiles to the fullest extent, in addition to some of the latest perspectives on protein identification for the downstream clinical validation of biomarkers."

Preparing MALDI Imaging Samples for Transport
Protein Discovery's new Tissue Imaging By-the-Slice incoming sample form has the info on

Tissue Imaging By-the-Slice

Some research groups are now wondering whether they should set up their own MALDI tissue imaging labs. Protein Discovery's $1,200 Tissue Imaging By-the-Slice service introduces researchers to the protein ion density profiles of their tissues of interest, and to the capabilities and benefits of MALDI imaging mass spectrometry, long before any capital purchase or lab personnel decisions must be made. Other groups might want to hunt for disease-specific biomarkers, or just find out whether their own tissue imaging findings can be replicated in another lab.
