Protein Discovery Opens Access to Tissue Imaging MALDI Mass Spectrometry with $1200 "By-the-Slice" Service

Knoxville, Tennessee, January 11, 2007—Protein Discovery, Inc., a provider of specialized mass spectrometry sample preparation products and services, today announced Tissue Imaging By-the-Slice, a new service that reads and delivers tissue imaging MALDI mass spectrometry data from a customer-supplied tissue sample for just $1,200. The announcement represents a marked improvement in the scientific research community's access to MALDI mass spectrometry tissue imaging data, which reveal the spatial arrangement of proteins in tissues, including those proteins for which antibody labeling is not available.

"The MALDI tissue images contain protein patterns specific to disease states and patient prognosis," said Richard Caprioli PhD, a pioneering researcher in the field of tissue imaging MALDI mass spectrometry. "Data acquisition requires people and facilities, but, once acquired, the data can be interrogated by multiple software platforms at the user's facilities and discretion. Protein Discovery's service means that more groups can look into the value of this technology for use in their research programs," he added. Dr. Caprioli is the director of the Mass Spectrometry Research Center and a professor of biochemistry at Vanderbilt University.

Protein Discovery's imaging mass spectrometry facility is fully equipped with the specialized instrumentation and materials required for MALDI mass spectrometry tissue imaging, such as the Leap Technology™ Sprayer for applying MALDI matrix aerosol to tissues, and Bruker Daltonics' Autoflex III mass spectrometer. Protein Discovery's tissue imaging operations are supervised by Jeremy Norris PhD, the company's director of mass spectrometry.
